{"id":329,"date":"2010-11-17T12:00:39","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T16:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/pbose\/"},"modified":"2015-06-02T16:19:31","modified_gmt":"2015-06-02T21:19:31","slug":"calcutta-and-globalization","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/pbose\/research\/india-and-south-asia-research\/calcutta-and-globalization\/","title":{"rendered":"Kolkata"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A project that I have been engaged with for over a decade has been an attempt to understand what role diasporas play in developmental dynamics within their ancestral, recent or even putative homelands. \u00a0My main focus has been on the city where I was born but\u00a0which I left at an early age, the Indian metropolis of Kolkata. \u00a0Over the course of the past ten years I have returned for several rounds of field research to examine in greater depth the changes that are currently transforming the city and what role if any diasporas are playing in such processes. \u00a0The results of my studies have been published as a series of\u00a0articles and book chapters and a book that is the lead in Routledge&#8217;s new series on Urban South Asia:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/pbose\/files\/2010\/11\/9780415735971.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-846\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/pbose\/files\/2010\/11\/9780415735971-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"9780415735971\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/pbose\/files\/2010\/11\/9780415735971-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/pbose\/files\/2010\/11\/9780415735971.jpg 434w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Entitled\u00a0<em>Urban Development in India: Global Indians in the\u00a0remaking of Kolkata<\/em>, this book focuses on three particular examples of\u00a0the city&#8217;s transformation since 1997: the struggle to develop\/preserve the once vast wetlands to the east of Kolkata, a US$400 million environmental improvement project, and several large luxury housing developments targeted at international owners both within the city and its suburbs. \u00a0This book weaves together narratives of migration and diasporas, postmodern\u00a0developmentalism and neoliberal urbanism, and identity and belonging in the\u00a0Global South. It examines the rise of middle-class environmental initiatives and\u00a0Kolkata\u2019s attempts to reclaim its earlier global status. It suggests that a form of\u00a0global gentrification is taking place through which people and place are being\u00a0fundamentally restructured.
