{"id":3788,"date":"2022-08-10T09:54:02","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T13:54:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/outcropn\/?p=3788"},"modified":"2022-08-10T09:54:02","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T13:54:02","slug":"fire-safety-pointers-for-farmers-processing-hemp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/outcropn\/2022\/08\/10\/fire-safety-pointers-for-farmers-processing-hemp\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Safety Pointers for Farmers Processing Hemp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electrical Safety, Solvent Safety, and Building Safety are All Essential for Fire Safety (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/Northwest-Crops-and-Soils-Program\/Articles_and_Factsheets\/Fire_Safety_August_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Downloadable PDF click here<\/a><\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Electrical Safety:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Do not overload electrical sockets, breakers, or circuits.<br \/>\u2022 Avoid putting cords against walls or across doorways.<br \/>\u2022 Do not run cords under or over furniture or coverings which can overheat and cause fire.<br \/>\u2022 Follow installation guidance for equipment as jerry-rigging creates risks.<br \/>\u2022 Use power strips equipped with overload protection.<br \/>\u2022 Check that all power strips and extension cords are tested and certified by a laboratory to national recognized standards, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>Drying equipment greatly increases an electricity load with unintended consequences. Listings are highly specified to each piece of equipment being tested. Equipment may be listed individually but plugged in together may create overloading of circuitry with wires shorting out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solvent Safety:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Use proper storage and handling of flammable liquids and explosive gases in the extraction process.<br \/>\u2022 Solvent products need to be stored in separate places from processing.<br \/>\u2022 Motors can become sources of ignition to ethanol vapor so must be located away from solvents.<br \/>\u2022 Make sure buildings are adequately ventilated.<br \/>\u2022 Use appropriate signage.<br \/>\u2022 Follow regulations as to amounts of flammable and hazardous materials which can be stored.<br \/>\u2022 DIY products can add risk.<br \/>\u2022 Dispose of waste products appropriately.<br \/>\u2022 Notify your local fire department if using hazardous products, to avoid unintended exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Solvents used in extraction such as butane and ethanol are flammable because they have low ignition temperatures. Solvent extraction can destroy plant waxes and terpenes. Solvent extraction may produce oil which contains chlorophyll or other harmful contaminants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building Safety:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Install smoke detection systems.<br \/>\u2022 Install fire sprinkler systems.<br \/>\u2022 Maintain smoke suppression systems.<br \/>\u2022 Use flame-retardant materials.
