February Changes

Red-Tailed hawk

Wildlife

In comparison to last semester, I saw fewer chipmunks and squirrels while I was walking around. I also didn’t hear as many birds. The most obvious signs that animals were still present at my site were from burrows in the ground and little tracks all over the snow.

Understory

The understory has been largely covered with snow since visiting my site in the fall. However, some ferns were still visible and green and there were many branches and grass like species sticking out of the snow.

Overstory

On trees other than the Eastern White Pines on my site, there are no leaves present. And even on the Eastern White Pine, needles aren’t noticeable until the top of the tree, so the overstay is generally very barren.
