Ali writing. We started and finished our day today in Rotterdam and I\u2019m excited to tell you about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than biking today, we took a train and a couple of buses out of Rotterdam to Neeltje Jans Delta Park, where the Oosterscheldekering, one of the storm surge barriers in the Netherlands and the largest in the world, is. Our commute was full of naps, music sharing, and, apparently, sneaky conversations (the sneaky conversations will make sense later \ud83d\ude09).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/WalkfromBus-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/WalkfromBus-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/WalkfromBus-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/WalkfromBus-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/WalkfromBus-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/WalkfromBus-scaled.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we arrived to Neeltje Jans (after a walk along a narrow pathway from the bus stop), we met with our tour guide and watched a film about Neeltje Jans and the construction of the Oosterscheldekering. The Oosterscheldekering is part of a series of construction projects called the Delta Works, which was a response to the devastating North Sea flood of 1953.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/DeltaExperience-1-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/DeltaExperience-1-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/DeltaExperience-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/DeltaExperience-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/DeltaExperience-1-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/netherlands\/files\/2024\/06\/DeltaExperience-1-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the film, we entered an immersive 4D animation titled \u201cThe Delta Experience\u201d, which showed us a recreation the flood of \u201853. Surrounded by swelling music and (very, very) loud thunder, we saw water levels rapidly rising as a house was destroyed a child struggled, and succeeded, to get to his family. When I came back downstairs to the lobby, I was greeted with a feather boa, birthday cake, a card, and all of my classmates and instructors singing Happy Birthday to me! The card was full of sweet notes from everyone, which I later learned were written while I was knocked out on the bus to Neeltje Jans.
