{"id":149,"date":"2019-03-19T05:45:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T09:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mpalumbo\/?p=149"},"modified":"2019-03-19T05:45:31","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T09:45:31","slug":"an-unexpected-caregiver-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mpalumbo\/2019\/03\/19\/an-unexpected-caregiver-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"An Unexpected Caregiver Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As memorials grew and grew in Christchurch, Lori (my Memory Center colleague) and I decided to get out into the country for the day.&nbsp;&nbsp;New Zealanders love hiking so well-marked and maintained \u201ctracks\u201d are available almost everywhere.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We headed for the Banks Peninsula and the village Akaroa on a bus from Christchurch (about 2 hours).&nbsp;&nbsp;The entire peninsula was created by a volcano and the winding journey over the highest peak down into the village is amazing.&nbsp;Once in Akaroa, we bought a map of the tracks that would take 3 hours or less and headed off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mpalumbo\/files\/2019\/03\/Aroara3-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mpalumbo\/files\/2019\/03\/Aroara3-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mpalumbo\/files\/2019\/03\/Aroara3-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Sharing a &#8220;track&#8221; with some of NZ&#8221;s finest in Akaroa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Climbing out of town toward the Akaroa bush reserves via quiet back streets and dirt trails, we were quickly by ourselves despite the crush of people debarking a very large cruise ship at the town\u2019s wharf.&nbsp;&nbsp;As we walked past a beautiful home, we were greeted by a woman coming out of her driveway to take her dogs for a walk.&nbsp;&nbsp;She asked if we were out for a walk and we answered with a compliment of her lovely village and an expression of sorrow for New Zealanders about the recent shooting.
