phenophases of woody plants
Close to my phenology site, I documented the bud break of a paper birch individual, most of which had already swelled and were beginning to turn green at the tips. Near some of the leaf buds, scaly, protruding flower buds were forming, but none of them were in bloom yet.

I was able to distinguish this species from other similar birches, mostly due to it’s range, as paper birch is more prominent in Northern Vermont, as compared to some of it’s lookalikes. Additionally Paper Birch has a stark white color, while some similar trees are more tan or cream colored.
