While urban children did have access to early public transportation options such as trolleys and streetcars, they were often limited by spending money for fares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although the journey to school in cities had it\u2019s anxieties, a majority of children lived in varying degrees of rural environments. As shown in the figure aside, most of the country was and still is mainly rural, and thus the trip to and from sch<\/span>ool was done almost exclusively on foot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-43 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-craig\/files\/2017\/12\/image2-300x218.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-craig\/files\/2017\/12\/image2-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-craig\/files\/2017\/12\/image2.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, modernity has changed the journey to school for both urban and rural school children, turning a walk to school into the exception rather than the rule. While rural school could not exist without bussing, initiatives in many cities seek a return to the old fashioned way of getting to school.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Projects and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0749379712003078\">studies<\/a> done by entities like the PEACH (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personal and Environmental Associated with Children&#8217;s Health) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">organization<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> asked <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">11-12 year olds from Bristol, England to wear GPS and accelerometers to measure physical activity and routes taken during the commute to and from school. This data was then mapped in GIS and gave researchers a wealth of information about travel trends which they then used to assess its contribution to the health and activity of the average student.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other similar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0091743508005689\">studies<\/a>\u00a0done by researchers\u00a0<span class=\"content\"><span class=\"text given-name\">Guy E.J.<\/span><span class=\"text surname\">Faulkner<span style=\"font-size: 10px\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\"><span class=\"text given-name\">Ron N.<\/span><span class=\"text surname\">Buliung,<span style=\"font-size: 10px\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\"><span class=\"text given-name\">Parminder K.<\/span><span class=\"text surname\">Flora, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\"><span class=\"text given-name\">Caroline\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text surname\">Fusco<\/span><span id=\"baff4\" class=\"author-ref\"><\/span><\/span>\u00a0on what is called\u00a0Active school transport (AST) also considered the implications of reaching school in some sort of active manner vs. passive ones like driving or school busses, and the effect of that on individual weight and general health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an odd and somewhat humorous manner, it appears that in light of growing obesity rates, children are once again being encouraged to walk or bike to school, forsaking the convince of school buses.
