{"id":614,"date":"2024-12-02T16:11:22","date_gmt":"2024-12-02T21:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-childhoods\/?page_id=614"},"modified":"2024-12-09T14:56:33","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T19:56:33","slug":"data-and-analysis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-childhoods\/historical-geographies-student-projects\/historical-geographies-of-childhood-student-projects-2024\/libraries-issy\/data-and-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Data and Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-right\">Children happy to read across the country&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-9123dee2 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">For understanding the wide impact libraries had, this <a href=\"https:\/\/uploads.knightlab.com\/storymapjs\/9b855f6174595bba16fb851b8adab841\/children-in-libraries\/index.html\">story map<\/a> explores individual primary photographs and stories from librarians across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-knight-lab wp-block-embed-knight-lab\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" src='https:\/\/uploads.knightlab.com\/storymapjs\/9b855f6174595bba16fb851b8adab841\/children-in-libraries\/index.html#?secret=7M806iL9rA' data-secret='7M806iL9rA' width='625' height='700' frameborder='0'><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">As seen through the images in the story map, children often utilized the library as a physical place to gather and to read. Librarians had education of children as a goal when creating library space or programs. Community came together in these spaces, even as libraries became mobile to become more accessible to rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-right\"><strong>Children experienced joy from reading in different ways&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">A group of librarians from Winnetka, IL, through the American Library Association, wanted to research what books children liked to read the best, in order to be more educated on which books to recommend. They created a graded list of the &#8220;best&#8221; books, based off the responses of over 36,000 children who participated in surveys in their classrooms. The librarians then published a list of 800 of the most popular, and according to their beliefs, &#8220;literarily valuable&#8221;, children&#8217;s books, along with quotes from children on why they enjoyed the book and other literary data, such as what they considered the reading level of the book. The librarians admit to omitting books they considered &#8220;definitely trashy&#8221; or &#8220;unsuitable&#8221;, even if they were &#8220;widely read&#8221;, demonstrating the bias (even if it is informed bias) they exhibited over their recommendations. Libraries were vital resources for them and their children to learn English. Areas such as New York City had higher concentrations of immigrants who were illiterate, despite having lower percentages of natural born illiteracy. They collected data on library expenditures and usage, noting the cities and size of the libraries (based on number of volumes). However, many had low percentages, perhaps because of accessibility issues or outdated library systems.
