{"id":5,"date":"2017-10-01T13:18:38","date_gmt":"2017-10-01T17:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-childhoods\/?page_id=5"},"modified":"2018-10-03T11:39:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T15:39:12","slug":"conceptual_framework","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-childhoods\/conceptual_framework\/","title":{"rendered":"Conceptual Framework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I use several connected themes to explore the conditions and experiences of childhood in early 20th century U.S. These can be considered to constitute a basis for further research in the emerging area of <em>historical geographies of childhood<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"text-indent: -.25in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u00a0Children&#8217;s <strong>mobility and migration<\/strong> experiences;<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-indent: -.25in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u00a0Systems, patterns, and experiences of <strong>social inequalities<\/strong> (e.g. race, gender, class, religion);<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-indent: -.25in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u00a0Child <strong>health and mortality<\/strong>, and how these shaped the notion of &#8216;childhood&#8217;;<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-indent: -.25in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u00a0Spatially varied <strong>legal and policy contexts<\/strong>, such as compulsory schooling and child labor laws; uneven categorization of &#8216;children&#8217; vs. &#8216;adults&#8217; by race and gender; connections to constructions of &#8216;the nation&#8217;, geopolitics, etc.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-indent: -.25in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong>Material conditions<\/strong> of urban and rural childhoods (housing quality, schooling, parks and playgrounds, environmental conditions, institutions of childhood such as orphanages);<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"text-indent: -.25in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span>Youth media representations, advertisements, discourses, and <strong>material culture<\/strong> (books, toys, games, etc.) and their role in reflecting\/constructing an idealized &#8216;American&#8217; childhood and home <i><\/i><i>place<\/i><br \/>\n<h1><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-109 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/mcope-childhoods\/files\/2018\/07\/25-Leading-Amusements-924x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"309\" \/><\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A sample data source &#8212; surveys of children in Worcester, MA on what games they played.
