Southern education in the U.S. South can best be told as a tale of two systems. One was made for a white ruling class, meant to advance elite Southerners to prosperity in a new South. The other was an afterthought put together for the long-oppressed rural black population of the Southern United States. This study into the systems of Southern education in the early 20th century aims to answer what about Southern life shaped how children’s education was thought of, and what were the factors that shaped the differences between white and black education in the U.S. South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
