Let’s go to the Beech

For this weeks phenology assignment I had to find a certain tree and identify it using the iNaturalist App. I had a bit of a hard time finding a deciduous tree among the lush population of Hemlocks at my spot, but I did find a young American Beech.

I could immediately tell this tree was an American Beech because they have pretty unique, long buds. The bark was also an ashy gray color with small circular light spots that were about a centimeter to an inch in size.

The tree did not show any signs of budding yet, so I selected no evidence of flowering on iNaturalist. Overall, I have been having an amazing time using the iNaturalist App and I even got some feed back on my last post from people in the community!

This also would not truly be my blog if I did not give two important updates. First, I did not have a Bill sighting 🙁 It was pretty cold so I did not hang around long enough for a visit. Second, the Japanese Barberry still has berries! Did your jaw drop because I know mine did. I cannot wait to see how many berries they have during my next visit, and to see if my little American Beech is budding!
