Welcome back to my Phenology Blog! This week instead of going to my typical spot at Centennial, my friends and I headed to Rock Point and North Beach for this weeks class wide bio blitz!
We did not see much since the snow was starting to melt, but there was a patch that we saw while we were hiking down to North Beach. There we found a track pattern from a galloper. This is because the two hind feet landed in front of the front feet. The tracks were pretty old and more worn into the snow and mud, so it was hard to make out a specific foot pattern. Based on the area we were in, which was more out in the open but a few yards away from the woods, my best guess would be any kind of rabbit, like maybe a cottontail. It also could have been a small squirrel, but the tracks were pretty close together and its gallops were not very long, meaning the animals legs had to be pretty short.
My friends and I also saw some ducks on the beach, but I did not take any photos because we were actually there to take a cold dip! Overall my experience with the iNaturalist app was really simple, and I found it easy to upload things to the class project. While I did anticipate on getting out to ID more than I did, a cold kept me inside this weekend. I am so happy I was able to find what I did and I can’t wait to ID more this winter!
