Another wonderful few days with the faculty that have been brave enough to help us test out the Learning Map approach for alignment of the Physics for Engineers – Statics – Dynamics course sequence at UVM. In the second year of the learning community, we focused on facilitating critical thinking and problem-solving, identifying language- and nomenclature-based stumbling blocks, and exchanging hands-on and augmented reality activities across the sequence. Through a series of one-on-one and group meetings, the faculty and facilitators identified priorities for the coming academic year and coordinated research activities for the final year of our pilot study.

We’re excited to share that our paper “Using Learning Maps and Bloom’s Taxonomy to Develop a New Instrument to Assess Knowledge Transfer from Physics to Statics Courses” was chosen as the Best Paper for the Mechanics Division at the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in Montreal this year! The paper will be presented by first author, Dr. Priyantha Wijesinghe during Tech Session T439 and celebrated at the Mechanics Division Awards Dinner.
Learning Maps at UVM Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Symposium
We were thrilled to share our project with the broader campus community during the inaugural UVM Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Symposium this week! I gave a lightning talk describing the project goals, the faculty involved, and how learning maps can be used as a focal point for instructors to plan teaching alignments. It was great to learn about the many SoTL projects happening on campus and talk to faculty in other colleges about our work. Bryan Dewsbury’s keynote, which focused on equity-minded STEM teaching, was timely and relevant to our project.
