Zach Hydusik – Teaching English in Japan

March 13, 2013 by Kazuko Suzuki Carlson

I would say so far working for Interac has been very similar to working for the JET program. I would say there are slightly more rules, like a stricter dress code but that overall they are the same job. My experience so far has been pretty good. I like my placement and the town I work with.

The interview process I thought was easier than JET. You just go to their website and fill out an application. If you make it past the online screening they will call and schedule a phone interview. And if you pass that you schedule to go to a group interview (basically if you make it that far you have the job you just need to show up and show that you’re not a crazy person haha. They do have you conduct a short 5 minute demo lesson that they record on camera. It’s not hard though. Basically a self introduction and sing head shoulders knees and toes)

With Interac there is also a lot shorter waiting period because they recruit twice a year as opposed to once. And they are pretty good about communicating with you.

I work at 5 different elementary schools. Basically I go to a different elementary school every day of the week. I have class with 5/6 graders every week but I will teach 1-4 on a varying schedule.

I would say the most immediate tip I can think of is if it’s JET or Interac show genuine excitement for wanting to live in Japan and be a part of the community. Also understand that urban placements are very rare. So be flexible if you want to increase your chances of being accepted.

Please email zhydusik@riacc.com if you want to ask me questions directly (or you can contact me through Facebook as well.)
