I explored Centennial Woods during the Bio Blitz, because it is the easiest area off campus for me to explore. The Bio Blitz took place on a very busy weekend for me, so I wasn’t really able to explore much more of Burlington.
My experience using iNaturalist was very good. I liked that I was able to import pictures, which allowed me to take pictures while exploring then go back and add them to my observations and identify them later. I also liked the suggestions for identifications it gave.
I made six observations and encountered five different species. I didn’t record everything I saw, but focused on the ones that were really interesting to me. I saw raccoons, a chickadee, a type of barberry, a type of fern, and a type of fungus.
While I’ve gotten much more comfortable with the iNaturalist app, I don’t really know how to navigate the City Nature Challenge website, and I couldn’t find where to see reports coming in from other cities. I was able to find the count of observations and number of species, and I found it very impressive how many people around the world are involved in this.
