Financial Capital: Colchester, Vermont

By being a native Vermonter and growing up in Colchester, Vermont, if there is one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s that us Vermonter’s are very self-sufficient. Everything we need we can provide, make, or get for ourselves without the help of any outsiders.

When thinking of the Financial Capital in Colchester there isn’t one specific thing that comes to mind.  We have a lot of small, local businesses that try to buy from one another as much as they can. Buying local is very important in a Vermonter’s mind because it helps to keep money in the pocket’s of other Vermonters instead of in the wallets of some multi-millionaire living in Cabo. Not only does buying local help our community but it also allows us to provide better quality of food and services from the money being circulated.

An example of a big company that does a lot of good for not only the people of Colchester, but for the people of all over the Champlain Valley area is the CVOEO. The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity provides food, housing, and a real sense of hope for those in need. The CVOEO organization states that, “it provides vital services to over eleven thousand households (over 25,000 individuals) every year”.

Another great company that is dedicated to helping our community is Morgan Stanley. The Morgan Stanley firm located in colchester has a mission “committed to improving the quality of life in the communities where we do business”.  The firm invests in several children’s health initiatives, as well as investing in our educational system, and many other programs that help diversify the culture. This Morgan Stanley branch encourages all staff to give back to the community in any way they can to help benefit our people and society.

The CVOEO  does a great job at helping the people of the Champlain Valley. Morgan Stanley does a wonderful job at helping the community as well on both a local and global scale. Both are great examples of economic resources that provide not only their services to our local economy but also work to better many of the other community capitals.
