Human capital consists of the general education, labor market experience, artistic development, health, and other skills that individuals possess within a community (Green & Haines, 2016). Community-based organizations (CBOs) provide a framework and foundation for building human capital by using an asset-based approach, which builds on the skills of an individual and finds uses for them (Green & Haines, 2016). In addition, human capital can also be tied to a population, creativity, and even self-esteem (Green & Haines, 2016).
In Corvallis, Oregon human capital is quite prominent. Corvallis has a number of elementary schools and a high school (Corvallis High School), but it is perhaps most notable for being home to Oregon State University (Corvallis). In terms of statistics, there are currently about 55,000 people living in Corvallis (United). For citizens 25 years of age or older, 95.7% of them are a high school graduate or higher (United). From that same demographic, about 58.5% of them have a bachelor’s degree or higher (United).
When viewing the health statistics for Corvallis, from people under the age of 65, about 6.1% of them have a disability (United). Using people of that same demographic, about 11.6% of that population is without health insurance (United). As of last fall, the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University is establishing what will be called the Oregon Center for Health Innovation (Klampe). This center will be built for the purpose of being an area where individuals can come together to connect with each other in order to develop solutions for pressing health problems, improve the wellbeing of the overall population, and create cost-sustainable health interventions that reduce preventable disease (Klampe).
Human capital serves as a foundation in Corvallis to which individuals can combine to become a community and use their differing skillsets to help create a better tomorrow.
