{"id":461,"date":"2011-02-23T10:41:31","date_gmt":"2011-02-23T14:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/?p=461"},"modified":"2011-05-17T11:30:16","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T15:30:16","slug":"learning-without-doing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/2011\/02\/23\/learning-without-doing\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning Without Doing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/02\/DSC013001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-470\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/02\/DSC013001-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/02\/DSC013001-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/02\/DSC013001.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span>The farmers I work with tend to be \u201chands-on\u201d types and learn best by doing.\u00a0 There is a lot to be said for experiential learning&#8211;but there are some lessons we are better off learning <em>without<\/em> doing.\u00a0 When it comes to maintaining our health and safety and that of our livestock, it is better to learn from others\u2019 mistakes and misfortunes rather than repeating them ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>After every outbreak there are \u201clessons learned.\u201d\u00a0 A few years back I asked an Extension colleague in Ireland what he felt were the most important lessons learned from the 2001 FMD outbreak.\u00a0 His slightly abridged recommendations follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">From Eugene Hayes, Teagasc, Ireland<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">1.\u00a0 Livestock producers must know and understand the risks, threat, precautions, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 2.\u00a0 All livestock producers must be registered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 3.\u00a0 Ideally all cattle and their movements must be on a computer database&#8212;no exceptions!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 4.\u00a0 Use movement permits for all cattle and sheep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 5.\u00a0 Select an area at random in the state and examine if it is possible to lock down that area as would happen in a real situation.\u00a0 Where would be the leakages from that area?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 6.\u00a0 Have a list of available disinfectants that are effective against FMD.\u00a0 Ideally you should have a quantity in secure storage, for when the run starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 7.\u00a0 Encourage livestock producers to be vigilant and report anything remotely like FMD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 8.\u00a0 Have a SWAT team available to deal with a potential outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 9.\u00a0 Have a support system in place for producers (financial and emotional) in the event of an outbreak.\u00a0 Let them know this in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> 10.\u00a0 Don\u2019t try to hide an outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How well have we in the US been paying attention to these lessons?\u00a0 Let me know what you think.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The farmers I work with tend to be \u201chands-on\u201d types and learn best by doing.\u00a0 There is a lot to be said for experiential learning&#8211;but there are some lessons we are better off learning without doing.\u00a0 When it comes to &hellip;
