{"id":437,"date":"2011-09-12T11:52:17","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T15:52:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/?p=437"},"modified":"2011-09-12T12:32:03","modified_gmt":"2011-09-12T16:32:03","slug":"why-worry-about-fmd-here-in-vermont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/2011\/09\/12\/why-worry-about-fmd-here-in-vermont\/","title":{"rendered":"Why worry about FMD here in Vermont?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/VT-on-fire.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-450\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/VT-on-fire-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/VT-on-fire-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/VT-on-fire-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/VT-on-fire.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Those of us working to build preparedness among farmers and farm communities to withstand a highly contagious animal disease disaster like foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) often get questions along the lines of these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t the veterinarians already have a plan in place to deal with such an outbreak?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cDoesn\u2019t the state Agency of Agriculture and Vermont Emergency Management have plans?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course they do.\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s reasonable to say our local, state, and federal vets know their roles. \u00a0Our\u00a0 animal health folks know what their authorities are.\u00a0 They are ready to respond.<\/p>\n<p>Realistically, however, most large-scale disasters are beyond the scope of a plan to easily contain.\u00a0 The more people who are prepared to do their part the better.\u00a0 There is no doubt a highly contagious animal disease emergency could be a disaster.\u00a0 Farmers need some knowledge of the responses that state and federal authorities would make so they can factor the impact of those actions into their own plans.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s use a wild fire as an analogy to a highly contagious disease event.\u00a0 The fire may be first identified in a specific area and resources will be directed at containing and controlling the fire.\u00a0 High winds can move fire beyond the fire breaks or in unexpected directions.\u00a0 Just as fire needs air and fuel and travels with winds, contagious animal diseases affect susceptible species brought in contact by animal movements or movements of people and equipment.\u00a0 Airborne spread is also possible with FMD.\u00a0 The challenge with FMD is that you can\u2019t feel or see it smoldering as it incubates in recently infected animals.\u00a0 The responders go put out the fire \u2013 cull animals where disease has been diagnosed \u2013 and try to figure out where it might pop up next &#8212;
