{"id":427,"date":"2011-01-04T11:02:33","date_gmt":"2011-01-04T15:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/?p=427"},"modified":"2011-01-04T11:03:35","modified_gmt":"2011-01-04T15:03:35","slug":"fmd-closes-south-korea-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/2011\/01\/04\/fmd-closes-south-korea-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"FMD closes South Korea markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Korea-colored.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-430\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Korea-colored-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Korea-colored-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Korea-colored.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>South Korea was unable to shake off foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in 2010.\u00a0 As the third outbreak of the year continues into 2011, the cull in South Korea has now surpassed the total of the 2002 outbreak (160,000) by 4-fold, reaching over 660,000 animals.\u00a0 One report stated, \u201cThe animal disease has effectively spread across the country despite extensive quarantine efforts.\u201d\u00a0 My conclusion, the disease had spread widely <em>before<\/em> quarantine efforts began.<\/p>\n<p>Eighty-four livestock markets in a country half the size of New England were closed as of late December to stop the spread of disease in this round which began at the end of November.\u00a0 By early January 2011, vaccination of susceptible livestock began.<\/p>\n<p>Quick quiz:<\/p>\n<p>Q1: Will quarantine of infected premises stop the spread of FMD?<\/p>\n<p>Q2: Will other infected premises be found after quarantine and stop movement orders are put into effect?<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the western hemisphere, efforts to eradicate FMD continue.\u00a0 The chief of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), Bernard Vallat, believes \u201cthe Americas, with political will and necessary resources, can realize eradication of the disease.\u201d\u00a0 When you think about the countries of Central and South America where FMD is still endemic&#8211;Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela&#8211;the truth of Vallat\u2019s words become obvious, particularly the reference to political will.<\/p>\n<p>Quiz answers:<\/p>\n<p>A1: From the quarantined premises, yes.\u00a0 From undiscovered premises, no.\u00a0 Disease will already have had time to spread by the time a farm is quarantined.\u00a0 Regional stop movements and enforcement of effective cleaning and disinfection are likely to be more effective in stopping the spread of disease.<\/p>\n<p>A2: Yes.\u00a0 It is very important to realize the moment disease is found on one farm, it has very likely spread to others.\u00a0 The trace back\/trace forward investigation conducted on identified farms is critical to quickly bringing the disease under control.\u00a0 The linkages from infected farms can determine the size of control zones and influence the consideration of other control measures.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition of this last point and willingness to cooperate by voluntarily implementing strict biosecurity by owners of susceptible livestock farms is needed to contain such a highly contagious disease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Korea was unable to shake off foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in 2010.\u00a0 As the third outbreak of the year continues into 2011, the cull in South Korea has now surpassed the total of the 2002 outbreak (160,000) by 4-fold, reaching &hellip;
