{"id":270,"date":"2010-11-15T14:33:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T18:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/?p=270"},"modified":"2011-05-17T11:32:07","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T15:32:07","slug":"value-of-contingency-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/2010\/11\/15\/value-of-contingency-planning\/","title":{"rendered":"Value of Contingency Planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/Airport-Warning.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-275\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/Airport-Warning-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/Airport-Warning-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/Airport-Warning.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On 9\/11\/2001 how many airlines switched to contingency plan \u201cgrounded\u201d?\u00a0 Airlines deal with contingencies every day.\u00a0 Weather and other factors lead to delays or cancellations of flights on an unpredictable but expected basis.\u00a0 Usually these factors impact flights over a limited portion of the country.\u00a0 A notable exception was the nationwide grounding of flights on 9-11.\u00a0 It seems somewhat obvious to an outsider that a cancellation of all flights for a period of days could have dramatic consequences for businesses associated with air flight and should be a subject of contingency planning. \u00a0\u00a0But what incentive does a business have to plan for an unlikely yet catastrophic scenario?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/eMERGENCY-pLANNING.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-273\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/eMERGENCY-pLANNING-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/eMERGENCY-pLANNING-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jmsmith\/files\/2010\/11\/eMERGENCY-pLANNING.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>It all depends on the goals of the business and the individuals running it.\u00a0 Before you can make a plan, you need to understand your long-term goals.\u00a0 A business in the sunset phase of its existence likely will not rebuild.\u00a0 A growing business likely would find a way forward even if needing to change course a bit.\u00a0 Being clear about your goals and your present business situation will make it easier to make appropriate decisions in a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>What is the worst case scenario in your business?\u00a0 A fire burns down the facility?
