{"id":472,"date":"2019-01-10T14:59:57","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T19:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/janus\/?p=472"},"modified":"2019-01-10T14:59:57","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T19:59:57","slug":"unions-and-income-inequality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/janus\/2019\/01\/10\/unions-and-income-inequality\/","title":{"rendered":"Unions and Income Inequality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the debate on income inequality earlier this year, David Madland advocated for unions in arguing that income inequality is a threat to american democracy. \u00a0Research done by four economists; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/irs.princeton.edu\/people\/henry-farber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Henry Farber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danjherbst.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daniel Herbst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.princeton.edu\/kuziemko\/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ilyana Kuziemko<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economics.princeton.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Princeton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sipa.columbia.edu\/faculty-research\/faculty-directory\/suresh-naidu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Suresh Naidu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sipa.columbia.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Columbia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that unions are in fact a potential force against growing income inequality.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile the scholars can\u2019t pinpoint the precise mechanism at work, they speculate that unions have indirectly increased pay at firms nervous that their own employees might organize. Unions have also lobbied for higher minimum wages and pushed to hold down executive salaries.
