{"id":24,"date":"2016-02-25T11:01:08","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T16:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jadickin-intromuseumstudies\/?page_id=24"},"modified":"2016-02-25T11:04:43","modified_gmt":"2016-02-25T16:04:43","slug":"field-trips-and-activities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/jadickin-intromuseumstudies\/field-trips-and-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"FIELD TRIPS AND ACTIVITIES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following trips to area museums are a central component of the summer course. \u00a0Specific trips and activities are subject to change for logistical or scheduling reasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Activities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practice handling museum objects and learn to assess their condition<\/li>\n<li>Explore different ways to organize exhibits and display objects through daily hands-on exercises<\/li>\n<li>Talk with professionals working in all areas of museums, from education and public relations to preservation of objects and curation of shows<\/li>\n<li>Research and present on a piece of art or historical object from the Fleming Collections<\/li>\n<li>Generate ideas for an upcoming show at the Fleming Museum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Field Trips<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to work at the Fleming Museum of Art, once a week the class will travel to an area museum, meet with museum professionals there, and learn about the museums&#8217; collections and work. \u00a0Currently, the following trips are planned<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center.<\/strong> \u00a0Meet with experts in museum education and outreach and learn about how ECHO engages visitors to think about local ecology.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelburne Museum.<\/strong> \u00a0Meet with experts in conservation of fragile historical objects and visit the conservation lab. \u00a0Students will also complete exercises while visiting different displays throughout the museum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sheldon Museum.<\/strong> \u00a0Meet with the museum Director to learn about the Sheldon collections and how the Sheldon became a historic house museum. \u00a0A side trip to the Vermont Folklife Center will focus on how audio and video materials can enhance \u00a0the display of artistic and historical objects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.<\/strong> \u00a0This visit will specifically focus on how museums develop a sense of place for visitors through exhibits, public programs and other efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following trips to area museums are a central component of the summer course. \u00a0Specific trips and activities are subject to change for logistical or scheduling reasons.
