I have been admitted into UVM for the upcoming semester. What is the first thing I need to do?

First congratulation on getting admission at UVM. After getting the admission papers from UVM, first thing you need to do is try to book a slot at your nearest American embassy for your visa interview. Make sure that you attend the interview well ahead of your joining date at UVM. Some times it may take long time to get your passport back with visa stamped on it after the interview. If you need any help regarding any issue related to visa, you can always contact either Office of International Education or ISA. We would be more than happy to help you out with anything and everything.

I am coming to UVM on so and so date. Will there be anyone from ISA to pick me up at airport?

As long as you contact us well ahead of your arrival date, we make sure that some one of us will be there at the airport to pick you up. I say it’s better if you contact us at least 15 days ahead of your arrival date, so that we will give you the name and phone number of the person who will be waiting for you at the airport. This way you can always be in touch with him through phone in case if there is any delay in flight.

What are the things I need to bring with me?

Here you get almost everything you need. Here we do have Indian store and you get almost all the spices and other food items in this store. Coming to winter clothing, here it is little bit expensive to buy jackets, thermal-ware, etc. compared to prices in India. Still in our opinion, it is better to buy these things here because of better quality. Here we are keeping one of the list we made. Go through the list and bring what ever you like. List.

What are the things I need to do in my first week at UVM?

The first thing you need to do is go and meet International student coordinator at OIE (633 Main St., Living/Learning Center, B-162) (Google Map). We strongly recommend you to arrive here in time for graduate student orientation given by office of international education, so that you will come to know what things you need to do on your part. More over most of the things can be taken care of at one place, i.e., at orientation it self, for example things like getting UVM ID card, opening bank account, getting social security number and filling out forms in case you are funded, etc. We also make sure that there would be someone from ISA with you to show you around until you get familiarized with the campus. You can look the office up online at this link. The map showing OIE on campus can be found online at this link.Secondly make sure that you went and talked to your advisor as soon as you arrived here. In case if you face any departmental problems, the only person who could bail you out from such problem is your advisor.
