It has been great getting to know Carolina and learning about Vermont Garden Network and its goals and work across the state. Over the past few months, Carolina and Vermont Garden Network have been providing ProGro fertilizer for participating gardens, facilitating soil samples, and offering technical assistance on topics such as pest and disease management, seed saving, medicinal plants, and much more! Just recently, as we drove through the North East Kingdom of Vermont to visit several Huertas participants, I had the opportunity to chat with Carolina and learn more about Vermont Garden Network and the origins of the Huertas/VGN collaboration.

Vermont Garden Network is a non-profit organization based in Burlington that has been around for twenty years. The organization provides support with gardening, which can take many forms, including coordinating and offering education and resources. As Carolina herself notes, “…the mission of the organization is to support and connect gardeners around the state, and that could be backyard gardeners, it could be a school garden, it could be a library or a senior residence or anywhere where people are growing food together and our support looks like garden education programming. We [also] have several grant programs that we’ve helped fund, community gardening initiatives. We have a mobile van that travels around the state sharing nutrition education; so, many ways of supporting gardeners to feel confident in growing their own food and being able to access their own food.” While Vermont Garden Network’s main base is in Burlington, they extend across the state, helping to cultivate support, engagement, and interest in gardening.

This season’s collaboration between Huertas and Vermont Garden Network has been some time in the making; for years, Vermont Garden Network provided seeds to Huertas. Several years ago, Carolina, Teresa, and Naomi began conversing more seriously about how to work together in a more organized fashion. Earlier this year, a grant opportunity arose from NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont), specifically the NOFA Famer Resilience Grant. Huertas and VGN applied jointly and began to plan for the summer ahead! Vermont Garden Network brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from past and current partnerships to the collaboration with Huertas, such as their work with affordable housing sites and New Farms for New Americans. As Carolina explains, the work with Huertas is similar in some ways to the work she’s “…been doing with New Farms for New Americans…working with people who have specific…culturally meaningful food that they are looking to grow in Vermont and so sourcing those seeds or those varieties and figuring out how to grow them in Vermont, I feel like is a theme that we’ve been working on with NFNA for a couple of years and so in that sense, it’s similar to Huertas.”

When asked what she is looking forward to for the rest of this summer, Carolina responded: “I think it’s always fun for me to work with people who are tending to gardens, have tended to gardens before, and then they learn something new that they didn’t realize they could grow in Vermont or that it was that easy to grow or that they could do with a plant, like that kind of moment of like, oh, I can also do that, or I can also grow that seed.” We talked about the hope that gardens and the act of gardening itself can provide. Especially in Vermont, where there are such long winters, gardens have the power to be sources of inspiration and hope for the warmer months ahead; we are looking forward to working with VGN and learning more about overwintering, among other topics. For the rest of the summer and beyond, we have a variety of potential projects planned, from planting garlic with Huertas participants to making natural remedies, so stay tuned to hear about these and more to come! Thank you so much, Carolina and Vermont Garden Network, for collaborating with Huertas this summer!

Summer 2023 Collaboration: Huertas & Vermont Garden Network! This summer Huertas has been collaborating with Carolina Lukac from Vermont Garden Network (VGN)!
