I am a second-year student at UVM studying Geography and Global Studies, with a minor in Latin American & Caribbean Studies. I am passionate about and interested in climate change, migration, refugee resettlement, political ecology, languages, and much more! I grew up in Vermont and because of this, Huertas is of particular interest and importance to me.

I spent two years living in Ecuador with my family during high school, which furthered my interest in migration, food justice, and related topics. I took a Spanish class with Professor Montesano at UVM called “Race, Identity, and Migrant Labor” during my first semester at UVM, in which I learned about Huertas. I have been inspired by and interested in the organization ever since then.

I am loving Huertas so far and being able to collaborate with the other interns, learn about food sovereignty and security, and engage with migrant farmworkers across Vermont. Outside of school and Huertas, I am an avid reader, and enjoy biking, running, traveling, and photography. I also work as a research assistant on projects relating to migration and refugee resettlement and am looking forward to both positions and to making connections between the two. Looking ahead to the rest of the semester, I am excited to write more posts for the blog, work to improve my Spanish language skills, learn more about gardening, and help make Vermont a more welcoming state and community for all!

¡Conoce a Eliza! ¡Hola, me llamo Eliza y soy una de las pasantes para el proyecto de Huertas para la primavera de 2023!
