I am incredibly excited for this work and excited to collaborate with the two other interns this spring. I study sociology at the University of Vermont with a concentration in Criminal Justice. Furthermore, I am minoring in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Art, and Biology. I am especially interested in the Huertas project because I lived in Guadalajara, Mexico at age nine and learned Spanish, which I will be using throughout this internship. I believe learning other languages and cultures is one of the best ways to begin to create a more equitable and less violent world. The thing I value most as a Huertas intern is connecting and conversing with the Huertas participants. Furthermore, I am interested in learning more about immigration rights as it relates to the American criminal justice system.

So far, Huertas has been a wonderful experience. I have learned about the dairy industry in Vermont and the experience of migrant workers in this industry, which prior to this internship I knew almost nothing about. I have already had many impactful experiences during my first in person visits to meet with participants on farms around Northern Vermont. Like I thought, my favorite part of the work has been connecting with all of the participants after conducting the formal interviews. It is especially exciting connecting with participants about areas in Mexico close to where I lived when I was young.

The most important thing to me as a Huertas intern is being someone that the participants can confide in and connect with. I learn something new everyday I work for Huertas, especially about food systems and gardening techniques. I can’t wait to do more field visits, learn more about these food systems, and begin to plant this spring.

Keep an eye out for two more profiles introducing the other two 2023 Huertas interns!
