Having grown up on a dairy farm in Upstate New York, Helaina brings a unique perspective and knowledge base to the team. Although she is still in her first-year of college, Helaina applied to Huertas after hearing about it in Dr. Dan Baker’s “World Food, Population & Development” course and took her chances at applying. As reflected on by Helaina, “unbenounced to me I’m actually quite capable of being an intern.”

Helaina has had a long interest in food systems and food justice. Having worked alongside migrant farmworkers at her own family’s farm, she remembers that from a young age she had an interest in the migrant farmworker community and thought it would be really great to create a program that could help support them in their situations, especially seeing that sometimes these farmworkers worked for farmers who weren’t always sympathetic. After coming to UVM, she was thus instantly happy to see the variety of organizations, including Huertas, who exist to do just what she had imagined.

Before coming to college, Helaina also had the chance to spend a gap year in Spain, which deepened her love of Spanish and allowed her to connect better to the migrant farmworkers she interacted with back home. As she said, “Even though I was in a very privileged situation, I learned how hard it was to be away from your family, your culture, and your native language. Adapting to another culture is unimaginably difficult.” Concerning how this experience affected her back home more directly, she also said that “I think being able to have conversations now with farmworkers in their native language creates a sense of community because that’s how I felt when people would speak English to me.”

Looking towards the rest of the semester, and especially the growing season ahead, Helaina is excited to use her skills and passion to learn and help others in her community.

¡ Conoce a Helaina!
