I wanted to get out and make a difference and see the effects of my work.” Annika joined Huertas as a field intern last spring but has come back as a fellow to help train new interns. Now in her third year at UVM studying Environmental Studies, Annika is excited to see what comes out of rejoining Huertas through fresh eyes and with more experience under her belt.

Annika spent the last semester studying in Nepal – quite different from both Vermont and Latin America, of which she traveled through before coming to college. Still fondly remembering her time in Bolivia and Mexico, Annika loves learning about other cultures and enjoys Huertas because she can make a connection to those places she visited by getting to know Huertas participants in Vermont. In fact, she said one of the main reasons she wanted to come back was to be able to reconnect with participants she had met and gotten to know the year before.

In the future, Annika wants to continue doing something that reflects her interest in traveling and food justice. In particular, she wants to work for a non-profit related to food and education. She hopes that she can tie in what she learns from Huertas with her passions of helping give people equal opportunities and access to food and nature. In the meantime, she is enjoying working for Huertas again and is excited to start brainstorming special projects with other Huertas interns.
