Since learning about Huertas as a Sophomore when she was taking a class with Professor Rachael Montesano, Julissa has wanted to get involved with Huertas. For her, joining Huertas has largely come from a deep appreciation of Latin American culture and a desire to connect with more people from Central America. Being of Guatemalan heritage and having lived in Mexico during a semester abroad, building experiences here in Vermont with farmworkers from these countries is personally paramount to Julissa.

When asked what she is most excited about, Julissa responded with “I’m looking forward to making personal connections…I think it’s a really beautiful thing that these people can be living so far apart from their families, but the connection is still so strong. I just want to be around Mexican culture because it’s so warm.”

But beyond these personal drivers, Julissa’s ambitions directly relate to the work she hopes to do with Huertas and in the future. In particular, Julissa intends to go back to school to study immigration law. When she was at UVM, she became very interested in systematic oppression and wants to be able to provide support for those with less power. She believes that Huertas will give her the chance to hear actual stories and create connections to the same marginalized groups that she hopes to advocate for later on. Moreover, through being a field intern for Huertas, she wants to become a more involved member of her community and introduce herself to other organizations that align with her beliefs and goals in life. Living in Vermont, this also entails getting to know people in the community who are directly affected by Vermont-specific issues and policies that impact migrant farmworkers.

¡Conoce a Julissa!
