Mia is a senior studying Global Studies as well as Nutrition and Food Science. As this is her last semester, she is happy to finally be able to take on this internship with Huertas. Since she took her first Spanish class at UVM three years ago with Professor Rachael Montesano, she has appreciated the work that Huertas does and believes that she can use what she’s learned through her studies and apply them to her internship.

Having recently obtained more international experience, Mia
believes that the semester she spent abroad in Spain last year greatly helped
her improve her Spanish proficiency and problem-solving skills as she was
thrust into a situation where she needed to be largely independent. Now that she’s
back in Vermont, she’s looking forward to being able to practice her Spanish
conversational skills and combine her interests with food access and nutrition with
Huertas. In particular, she thinks it’s interesting to think about food access
in borderlands, and how fresh produce from gardens can have benefits socially,
mentally, and nutritionally for those who maintain them.

When asked what she was most excited for, Mia responded with
“I’m really excited to plant gardens; I’m excited for it to be warm out. I’ve
never had an internship where I could be out in the field, especially because there
are a lot of beautiful areas in Vermont.” This also relates to her goals after
graduating college, as she hopes to move somewhere warmer. Considering her academic
interests and all she’s learned so far with Huertas about migrant farmworkers
and Latinx immigrants in Vermont and across the United States, she wants to
work with immigrant populations in one way or another. Specifically, she has
considered either working as a translator in health care fields or in social
work-based refugee and immigrant casework.

¡Conoce a Mia!

Nunca he

Meet Mia!
