Ana is studying
English with a Global Studies minor at the University of Vermont, and is
looking forward to her third year on the Huertas team! She began as the Media
and Communications Intern, and is excited to pursue her second year as a Field
Intern. Ana is from Mexico City, Mexico, and has been living in Vermont since
she completed high school.

When asked Why
Huertas? Ana confided that she had no idea about the project or the migrant
workers in the dairy industry prior to Huertas. When she discovered the
program, she saw it as a simple solution to her homesickness— a perfect way to
connect with Spanish-speaking people that shared her colloquialisms and
regional history. In the past, Ana has done a lot of work in small non-profits,
but looking forward she is interested in doing more work in line with her
university degree, possibly writing or narrative journalism. Her dream job is
to be a non-fiction writer.

One piece of advice Ana has for new interns is to be unafraid to speak Spanish with Huertas participants. Although it can be stressful, this fear can cause hesitancy, which in turn means that you spend less time talking with and getting to know the participants. Ana says that the super intimate conversations that she has had with Huertas have been invaluable to her college experience. According to Ana, Huertas has helped her gain confidence writing about food security/migrant issues, research skills, and communication skills. She says that, as an intern, you have to be independent and self-motivated, and really learn how to organize your time in an effective manner. Her goal for this semester is to do more Huertas-related writing.

************************************************************************

¡Hola de nuevo,
Ana!

¡Esta estación Huertas da la bienvenido de nuevo a Ana! Cuando descubrió el programa, lo vio como una solución simple para su nostalgia, una manera perfecta de conectarse con personas hispanohablantes que compartían sus coloquiales y su historia regional.
