Gabby is a Health Science student with a minor in Global Studies and Chinese. She currently lives in Norwich, Vermont (when she isn’t at UVM!). At home, she speaks both Portuguese and English, which helped her develop Spanish language skills. Gabby heard about Huertas during a class at UVM with Professor Montesano about race/ethnicity and immigration who suggested she apply to this internship.

            When asked
what about Huertas appeals to her, Gabby spoke of her passion for humanitarian
work, love of languages, and desire to learn how to garden. Huertas is one of three
non-profit organizations that Gabby currently works with; she is also a Communications
Assistant for the Himalayan Cataract Project and a volunteer for the DREAM Project.
In the future, Gabby is interested in attending law school and pursuing a
career in global health and humans right policy (preferably at the United
Nations!). Her dream job is to start her own non-profit for global health and human
rights issues.

This Huertas season, Gabby is most excited to make a positive impact in the greater VT community, meet inspiring people, and help them in any way she can. She is also excited to get to know the Huertas intern team better—in her own words, it takes a special kind of person to do humanitarian work. During this semester, Gabby believes that Huertas will help her gain real-world experience working with people, awareness of privilege/how she can do more with the privilege that she has, and consciousness about the realities of world outside of her college bubble where half an hour away people live in poverty.

In her work with Huertas, Gabby has several important goals: make sure that the Latinx migrant community in Vermont has all of their needs and rights met to the best of our abilities, and to give a positive image of American (US) people. Her most important goal, by far, is to make sure that the Latinx migrant community is treated as people and not as an inferiority in Vermont.

************************************************************************

¡Bienvenidos,
Gabby!

¡Este semestre el equipo de Huertas da una bienvenida a Gabby, nuestra nueva becaria de campo!
