During her time at UVM, Annika realized her passion for
the anthropological side of her education in which she explores cross-cultural
phenomenon related to her studies. Last semester, she wrote a research paper
about the Migrant Justice organization which captured her interest in migrant
justice projects in Vermont. Through her investigation and discussions with
faculty, she came to learn about Huertas and the work that it does to benefit
Latinx farmworkers in need of better food-security measures.

When asked what specifically drew her to Huertas, Annika
said that she took a gap year from college and travelled through Peru, Mexico
and Bolivia, where she became very passionate about environmental work and food
security issues in Latin American countries. During her gap year, Annika also
interned at the Boston non-profit, Corporate Accountability, that worked with policy
surrounding human rights issues. Since coming to Burlington, Annika confesses
that she has felt disconnected from the global studies and anthropological
aspect of human rights. Therefore, she is extremely excited for this hands-on
experience with Huertas!

In her internship this season, Annika hopes to improve her fluency level in Spanish, flexibility and organizational skills, as well as her skills as a “self-starter.” Her goals during her time with Huertas are to meet the migrant participants, learn their stories, share what she knows about food-security, as well as to get to know the other interns. Next fall, Annika will be traveling abroad to Nepal through a field-based program with an independent research project called “Development, Gender and Social Change.” In the future, Annika wants to pursue international environmental justice and work for a NGO related to those interests.

************************************************************************

¡Bienvenidos, Annika!

Annika es una becaria de campo para Huertas esta estación, una estudiante dedicado al grado de Ciencia Medioambiental con un menor en Construcción Verde a la Universidad de Vermont.
