Emma studies Global Studies and Spanish at the University of Vermont, and is extremely excited to begin her journey with Huertas! Emma first learned about Huertas in a course called “Sustainable Community Development” two years ago. Last year, Emma studied at the University of Murcia in Murcia, Spain for six months, where she continued to cultivate a strong desire to practice the Spanish language and meet new people of different cultures (and WORLDS)! When she came back from Spain, she realized that the Huertas Project was a perfect blend of helping people in the local community and practicing her Spanish skills.

Emma continued to deepen her interest in community development projects as an AmeriCorps member this past summer, in which she created summer programming for underserved, local youth in Essex Junction, Vermont. She realized her passion for connecting community partners and members together to create wonderful new initiatives that benefit the future generations of a community. As she prepares to graduate from UVM, Emma is finishing an Honors thesis on the relationship between community assets and the self-sufficiency of refugees in Chittenden County, Vermont. Her time in Vermont has led to an indescribably vast interest in immigration and refugee resettlement in the United States today.

As the media and communications intern, Emma hopes to continue promoting the Huertas Project to the greater Vermont community and raising awareness for the issues faced by the Latinx migrant population in Vermont today.

**********************************************

¡Bienvenidos Emma!

Emma Gianoplus es nuestra becaria de medios y comunicaciones por 2019.
