The film highlighted the accomplishments and hardships that Dolores Huerta faced during her lifetime. As a Mexican-American woman who fought for Latinx farm workers rights starting in the 1960’s, she was met not only with challenges from the expected suspects (i.e. government, farm owners) but from inside her own movement as well. Despite the feelings of animosity and resistance from her male counterparts, and eventually being pushed out of the United Farm Workers (UFW); Huertas never stopped fighting peacefully.

Huerta quickly realized that fighting for farm workers’ rights alone wasn’t going to achieve true progress. Leaders working in Vermont’s farmworker community and specifically the dairy industry, spoke to themes of activism and how to lead a movement. Abel Luna, a member of Migrant Justice, called upon the importance of organizing from a grassroots level. “Food systems come from cheap labor and unfair conditions that prevent people from thriving. No one is going to change the conditions until the people most affected stand up.” This lesson is true for activism and determining where one fits into a movement. There is no match for understanding an adversity unless one has experienced it. This distinguishes between the leaders and supporters. For white Vermonters, supporting with their purchasing power, talking about farm workers rights and conditions in their communities, and showing up when needed, are all ways to contribute effectively.

From the grape strike with the UFW to her current community organizing work with the Dolores Huerta Foundation, Huerta’s passion is evident in all she does.
