Meghan is a Community and International Development major with a minor in Spanish. Growing up in the rural Northeast Kingdom and being surrounded by farmland, she developed a passion for locally grown food and sustainable food systems. The ruralness of the NEK lead Meghan to specifically focus on how isolation factors into food security. While Meghan grew up knowing about the involvement and impact of migrant workers in her community, she never had the chance for much interaction. As a field intern, Meghan wound up in her town for a field visit in which she was able to connect to her community in a completely different way.

“A trailer which I passed by everyday on my way to school is home to a kind, passionate man with a love for cooking! I was so happy to have the opportunity to connect with a farmworker in my town who I have probably smiled and waved to many times…but would’ve never made the meaningful connection without Huertas.”

While the main focus of the Huertas project is to increase food security through supplying gardens to migrant dairy workers, a second yet equally as important aspect is creating connections and friendships. Bridging the gap between the farm and the community in which it’s situated is something not often achieved; making this a special moment.

Meghan had known about Huertas since freshman year after alumna, Jessie Mazar presented about the project in one of her classes. After her time in Spain studying abroad, Meghan felt confident enough in her Spanish to become involved. Meghan always had an interest in connecting with communities cross-culturally. Experiences in UVM service learning courses in St. Lucia and Cusco, Peru allowed her to expand her understanding of topics of food equity, nutrition, and economic security in an international lense. Experiencing other cultures lead to a curiosity on how food systems differ depending on the culture, economy, and region. Huertas has given Meghan the chance to continue profounding her knowledge on these big pictures topics while focusing on how they’re impacting her community here at home in Vermont.

Meet Meghan, one of our 2018 field interns!
