{"id":2629,"date":"2012-05-04T16:38:33","date_gmt":"2012-05-04T20:38:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/?p=2629"},"modified":"2012-05-04T16:38:33","modified_gmt":"2012-05-04T20:38:33","slug":"frosted-hops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/2012\/05\/04\/frosted-hops\/","title":{"rendered":"Frosted hops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of Vermont got hit by a pretty hard frost last weekend, and we&#8217;ve received numerous calls about what to do about frosted hops.\u00a0 In our two-year-old variety trial, Nugget in particular got a good wallop, whether that was because it isn&#8217;t as frost-tolerant as some of the varieties or because it was a little taller then the others is unknown.\u00a0 Things looked pretty grim across the whole yard the morning after the frost, but a few days later, it seems like most of the plants have recovered.\u00a0 For the varieties that were already a couple of feet tall, the frosted tips are looking brown and wilted like over-cooked asparagus.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2632\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030184.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2632\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030184-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030184-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030184-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frost-damaged hops<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What to do?\u00a0 Well, the tips of those shoots are good and dead, and they won&#8217;t continue to grow up.\u00a0 With the terminal buds dead, some of them are even starting to send out sidearms, which some reports say can take over as the growing point, but with reduced growth and yields as a result.\u00a0 In our hopyard, we&#8217;ve clipped back the shoots where the frost has nipped the tip, and the hop crown has already sent out new, undamaged growth.<\/p>\n<p>For those who have a newly-planted hopyard, or have weaker crowns where only one or two shoots have emerged, I would suggest caution in trimming back the hills too much.\u00a0 The hop crown might be too weak to push more growth.\u00a0 By not trimming back the growth that has had its growing point nipped, you might lose your yield, but hopefully you won&#8217;t lose the entire hill.<\/p>\n<p>While you are out in the yard, keep a sharp eye out for downy mildew spikes!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2635\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2635\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030221.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2635\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030221-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030221-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/hoppenin\/files\/2012\/05\/P1030221-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2635\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Downy mildew spike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is downy mildew making itself known: note the short internodes with down-curled leaves, particularly in comparison with the longer, leggy growth you see in the picture above.\u00a0 If you see these spikes, get &#8217;em out of your yard!\u00a0 Other than that, we don&#8217;t really counsel removing the first flush of growth in the Northeast.\u00a0 In the Pacific Northwest, producers often prune the first growth, but here, our growing season is a bit shorter, and barring new data, we advise against pruning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of Vermont got hit by a pretty hard frost last weekend, and we&#8217;ve received numerous calls about what to do about frosted hops.\u00a0 In our two-year-old variety trial, Nugget in particular got a good wallop, whether that was because it isn&#8217;t as frost-tolerant as some of the varieties or because it was a little &hellip;
