The UVM Film Series had a very successful first year! The UVM Film Series is a collaboration between Film and Television studies, the Lane Series, and the Fleming Museum of Art. Each year we will screen four or more films on campus with a preceding lecture and a following Q&A. The films will be grouped by a theme and various guests will be brought in to discuss the film. A Film and Television Studies faculty will direct each year, giving lectures, inviting guests and overseeing the 1 credit course that students can take in conjunction with the film series. What is unique about this film series is the interaction between Burlington community members and UVM students and faculty. We had some wonderful discussions this year about film noir, and we are looking forward to next year’s topic of women directors!
Students can now register for this 1 credit course (listed as FTS 95: UVM Film Series), and community members can now purchase a membership for next year’s series. As always, you can also just come for the evening (community members $10 for a ticket and students with a valid ID $4). Please feel free to email Hilary Neroni (Hilary.Neroni@uvm.edu) with any questions. Please check the Lane Series website for all updates.
2011-12 Season: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN DIRECTORS
With a woman finally winning an Academy Award for Best Director in 2010, it’s time to celebrate women directors from around the world. The acclaimed directors from this year’s series explore a number of ways that women struggle with society’s expectations, and how those assumptions affect their personal hopes, dreams, and experiences. By taking an unflinchingly honest look at women in roles such as filmmaker, survivor, teacher, and writer, these directors offer new insights into the female, and ultimately, the human experience.
