{"id":304,"date":"2013-09-12T11:21:42","date_gmt":"2013-09-12T15:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/?p=304"},"modified":"2013-09-13T07:21:03","modified_gmt":"2013-09-13T11:21:03","slug":"ireland-today-friday-the-13th-of-september-2013-09-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/?p=304","title":{"rendered":"Ireland today, Friday the 13th of September, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_307\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/9-4-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Padraig-French-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-307\" alt=\"Teagasc Dairy Scientist Padraig French welcoming farmers to the workshop\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/9-4-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Padraig-French-Copy-300x153.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/9-4-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Padraig-French-Copy-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/9-4-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Padraig-French-Copy.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teagasc Dairy Scientist Padraig French welcoming farmers to the workshop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last week I attended the Dairy Business Expansion Conference near Kilkenny.\u00a0 I thought it was\u00a0great!\u00a0\u00a0 About 175 farmers, all clients, attended this Teagasc day-long event.\u00a0 It\u00a0was\u00a0actually a test of the method and topics.\u00a0 The week before, about 15 Teagasc dairy advisors (extension agents) met at the site with researchers to discuss how best to teach the topics on the day.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of Ireland&#8217;s stated goals\u00a0is to expand milk production by 50% in the year 2020 over the 2007\u2019s production.\u00a0 The European Union\u2019s dairy marketing quota ends on April 1, 2015.\u00a0 Dairy farming, on average, is the most profitable type of farming in Ireland.\u00a0 So, many dairy farmers are looking to expand, and non-dairy farmers are thinking about getting started.\u00a0 The point of the Conference was to get farmers thinking about and working on the nuts and bolts of a possible expansion.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The main topics for the day were:\u00a0 1) Return on your investment; 2) Managing cash flow; and 3) Dealing with risk.\u00a0 Farmers were made up into groups of 15-10 people, and they stayed with their group for the day (which ran from 10 am to 3 pm).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_305\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/9-4-2013-q-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-305\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-305\" alt=\"Last minute preparations in front of the shed with calf pens. Note hay bales used as sound-deadeners in front of shed, there is an identical shed to the right of the bales.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The day began with a short welcome.\u00a0 Farmer groups moved into the calf sheds for a 1-hour session:\u00a0 Return on Investment.\u00a0 There was plenty of discussion as farmers figured how much a given farm would need to invest for a certain expansion.\u00a0 We found plenty of places to invest:\u00a0 soil fertility and reseeding; water, fencing, and roadways for grazing infrastructure; milking facilities; wintering facilities and manure storage; and cows and heifers.\u00a0 Next:\u00a0 how much of your own money do you put in versus how much to borrow?\u00a0 Would your bank lend you this kind of money?\u00a0 Do you need to invest that much?\u00a0 Our group had a good discussion on how much overrun to plan on.\u00a0 Experience at the Greenfield Farm shows at least 10% is a good figure.\u00a0 One farmer in our group said that any overrun shows poor budgeting and estimating!\u00a0 Then the groups worked on a partial budget to calculate potential profit from the additional cows, and compared that to the additional assets and equity put into the expansion to calculate a return on assets and return on investment.\u00a0 We were plenty busy for an hour!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_306\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/8-29-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-306\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-306\" alt=\"The modest milk room at Greenfields farm, with milking parlor in shed behind the green building\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/8-29-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Copy-300x154.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/8-29-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Copy-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2013\/09\/8-29-2013-b-Greenfield-Farm-Kilkenny-Copy.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The modest milk room at Greenfields farm, with milking parlor in shed behind the green building<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Farmers headed outside to look at cows and pasture and hear about how the Greenfield Farm is doing compared to their plan of 3 years ago:\u00a0 budget versus actual.\u00a0 Then back into the sheds for Cash Flow work.\u00a0 The groups estimated milk income, and several of the important costs.\u00a0 They used 1 year of actual figures and estimated for the next 5 years.\u00a0 They had to estimate principal and interest payments, add up the columns and look at the Bottom Line.\u00a0 Which years were negative?\u00a0 How much?\u00a0 What could be done to either fix that or live with it?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next- lunch!\u00a0 Then a look at how physical production of grass and cows are doing compared to the original plan, and in the very wet year last year and very dry summer of 2103.
