Many producers are expanding and securing a lease on a maple sugarbush can be a viable alternative to purchasing the land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/farmvia\/files\/2019\/11\/maple-woods-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1752\" width=\"225\" height=\"153\" \/><figcaption>Photo Credit: Mark Isselhardt<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Maple stand quality, accessibility, access to power and\nother factors will impact the rental price. Cash rental rates are common for\nmaple forests. A typical rate in recent years has been about $1.00 per tap. In\ncompetitive maple regions in Vermont rental rates are $1.50 or more per tap. In\nregions with less demand or less desirable forest parcels $0.50-$0.99 is\nobserved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting flexible terms is an option for parties that want to\nshare profits or risk between tenants and landowners. A flexible cash rate can be\nwritten so that the annual rate adjusts for the market price of syrup. Rental rates\ncould also be adjusted for a variable crop yield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UVM Extension is working on rental resources and maple lease\ntemplates this fall. New resources will be presented at Vermont Maple\nConferences in January and made available online.
