We are expecting approximately 270 people in<br \/>\nthe class again this fall, as interest in the environment is definitely<br \/>\non an upswing.\u00a0 The TA position is a paid job and, in addition, you can<br \/>\nreceive up to two credits through ENVS 284.<\/p>\n<p>Being a TA is a demanding and rewarding experience.\u00a0 We ask a lot of you<br \/>\nand we are most grateful for all that you offer to the students in the<br \/>\ncourse.\u00a0 We expect the TAs to represent the very best of what the<br \/>\nEnvironmental Program has to offer, since you will be role models for<br \/>\nyounger students.\u00a0 As you know, a good TA can make a powerful and<br \/>\nlasting impression on students.<\/p>\n<p>Being a TA means not only taking responsibility for your section(s). You<br \/>\nare also responsible for attending class and working effectively in a<br \/>\nteam with other TAs to manage the course logistics and assignments.<\/p>\n<p>The duties for the position of TA include:<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 meeting with students during weekly labs \/ discussion sessions<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 leading field trips, implementing lab activities<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 grading weekly homework assignments<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 attending lectures (MWF 10:40-11:30)<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 managing Web CT\/Blackboard tools<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 attending mandatory weekly TA meetings<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 monitoring and grading exams<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 handling audiovisual equipment in class<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 other support work<\/p>\n<p>You need to have taken ENVS 001 or a comparable course; it is a good<br \/>\nidea to have completed or be enrolled in ENVS 151. Juniors and seniors<br \/>\nare both welcome to apply; non-ENVS majors can also apply if they have<br \/>\nrelevant experience and course work.\u00a0 Previous teaching experience is<br \/>\ncertainly valuable though not required.\u00a0 As you can imagine, being a TA<br \/>\nmakes a very nice entry on your resume, showing your experience as a<br \/>\nteacher and as a member of an academic community.\u00a0 It is also a great<br \/>\nthing for references to write about when you need letters of<br \/>\nrecommendation.<\/p>\n<p>*TO APPLY:*\u00a0 Please send an email to Amy Seidl at amy.seidl@uvm.edu and put &#8220;TA application&#8221; in the subject<br \/>\nheading.\u00a0 In your message, please include:<\/p>\n<p>(1) 1-2 paragraphs about why you want to be a TA and which days of the<br \/>\nweek (MTWTh 1-4pm) you will be available for labs and whether you are<br \/>\ninterested in leading one or two labs per week<br \/>\n(2) how best to contact you via phone and email<br \/>\n(3) the name of one UVM faculty person as a reference with his\/her email address<br \/>\n(4) an attached copy of your resume<br \/>\n(5) a sample of your writing &#8212; a short paper or part of a paper<br \/>\n(because writing is such an important part of this course)<\/p>\n<p>You can also submit these materials to my Bittersweet box if that is<br \/>\nmore convenient.\u00a0 I will hold interviews and make preliminary selections<br \/>\nbefore the end of the spring semester.\u00a0 I look forward to receiving your<br \/>\napplications &#8212;\u00a0 Cheers, Amy Seidl<\/p>\n<p>*<span style=\"color: #000099\">DEADLINE: April 12, 2013<\/span> *<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello folks, It&#8217;s that time again.\u00a0 The Environmental Program is looking to fill 10-12 Teaching Assistant positions for ENVS 001, Introduction to Environmental Studies, for Fall 2013.
