Phenology Walk 4-15-25

The day we went to collect our data was 4-15-25!

While looking at the different trees, I noticed...

No lead buds, no increasing leaf size, no open flowers, no pollen release, no fruit or seed drop,

But i also noticed....

Budding flowers and open flowers

Phenological Patterns:

The five trees were going through some different phenological changes, for example:

The Red Oak I observed had between 11-100 flowers/budding flowers, and no open flowers. But the Red Maple I observed on a different part of campus had between 101-1000 flowers/budding flowers, and out of those flowers 50-74% were open. This significant difference shows how the Oak tree and Maple tree are going through different phenological changes right now.

NPN's website (https://www.usanpn.org/news/article):

Who are the NPN?

The National Phenology Network!!!!!

The USA-NPN Team includes staff, students and collaborators who work together to collect, organize and deliver phenological data, information, and forecasts to support natural resource management and decision-making, to advance the scientific field of phenology, and to promote understanding of phenology by a wide range of audiences.

From the NPN website about section

Something interesting I found on the website was...

  • The article "2025 Heat Accumulation vs Rodent Prognostication" talks about the comparison between Punxsutawney Phill's weather predictions and the real scientific weather patterns.
  • It then delves into how heat accumulation in the US is different between different zones. Where the majority of the country is behind on heat accumulation, the West Coast is on schedule.
  • The graph shows data about flowering, breaking lead buds, and whether the weather is warmer, cooler, or typical.
  • It concludes saying that Phil is correct for some parts of the US, but not for the rest of the US!

Go check out the NPN and have fun in the nicer weather!
