Oakledge Park: A Wonderland

Ever heard of Oakledge Park? If you’re living here in Burlington, it’s definitely something you might want to check out. This blog will be revolving completely around a certain section of this marvelous park, and if that doesn’t peak your interest enough to go check it out well I don’t know what will.

Let’s start with how you get there. It’s easy enough, start out by making you way down Pine Street. If you’re facing the lake from UVM you’re going to turn left on to Pine off of Main. Travel down Pine until you reach the intersection of Pine and Flynn Ave. Then, take a right on Flynn and at the end of the road you will find signs directing you to parking and recreational areas. You have arrived!

Now let’s talk about where I will be spending the majority of my time in the park during this blogging extravaganza. Upon entering the park, you will notice many a pavilion, and paths meandering through fields and tree-studded areas. The point of reference you’re going to want to look for is the tennis courts. You really can’t miss them. Once you’ve located those, right behind them you will find an entrance to the Island Line Trail. Hop on that trail and soon you’ll come to a little off-path that will lead you into what seems like an abandoned, or burnt down housing complex, as there are bare chimneys and concrete bases scattered around the trees. Find the chimney with the lovely graffiti hand on it (pictured below) and wa-la, you have found my spot.

If these directions weren’t quite clear enough, check out the map!

Here at Oakledge, and in my area specifically, you will see a pretty good mix of plant growth. The main tree species you’ll be looking at are Red and Sugar Maples, Eastern White Pines, some Northern White Cedars, Green Ash, Red Oak and more! You’ll be hearing a lot more about these species in the near future, especially as we begin to transition into the winter months.

That’s all for today folks! Be sure to keep checking in as we observe the changing environment of the one and only Oakledge Park in beautiful South Burlington.
