Even though it’s only been two weeks since my last visit to the meadow, the area has completely transformed. The bright yellow goldenrods are now just fluffy seeds and only a few white asters remain. Most of the sumac trees are completely bare now, giving the meadow an emptier look. There is now an abundance of leaves, moss and dead vegetation littering the ground. Despite the dying flora, the wildlife is still very active. As I walked through the area, I saw squirrels running around falling logs and heard various species of birds chirping from the treetops. I overturned some rocks and logs to find slugs, worms, centipedes, and other various critters that attempt to remain unseen.
Hello everyone! This blog will be tracking the meadow in Centennial Woods throughout the seasons. I chose this particular location because it has a high diversity of plants and will likely show significant changes throughout the year. To get here, go to the main entrance of Centennial Woods (just to the East of the UVM Medical Center) and follow the path as it goes North. This should bring you to a large clearing with a variety of flora including many tall grasses. If you go out, take a moment to listen to the brook and feel the cool late fall breeze!
