My spot: The field/meadow right before Rock Point.
How to get there: I rode my bike down to the entrance of North Beach and then walked it down a path until I got to my spot. I will probably have to take the bus in the future when it gets colder.
Why I chose this spot: It resonated with me; when we first visited Rock Point it stuck out to me. When my mom came to visit, we went to Rock Point and I noticed that this area already looked different from when we went there for our lab, so I figured it would be a good place to observe as the seasons change. Also, this spot reminds me of the fields of wildflowers in the countryside where I grew up.
Weather: clear, blue skies, 60 degrees and very sunny with a light breeze.
Short description of the vegetation: The ground is soggy, the grass is so wet that you can hear it squish under your feet as you walk. There are tons of tall thistle-looking plants, which I used the app Picture This to identify and it says that they’re bonesets. There are also some Canada thistles and lots of aster, which has small purple flowers. There’s also lots of little piles of what I think is rabbit poop.
Most common woody plants I saw:
- Eastern white pines – most prevalent
- Sugar maple – encircling my spot
- Aspen – a good amount
- Northern red oak – some
