But, sometimes we are inconveniently far from the closest wash room and sink. Hand washing stations provide a portable means of washing hands on farms, at farmers\u2019 markets, and at recreational sites. This guide was motivated by a desire to improve current handwashing station practice with a focus on minimizing or even removing all contact between the user\u2019s hands and surfaces of the station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The key design features of a handwashing station include <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clean supply water <\/strong>that is safe and of adequate sanitary quality. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hands free operation of water <\/strong>which allows thorough washing of hands with full attention and also prevents cross contamination via faucet handle and other surfaces. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gray water collection<\/strong> for controlled disposal to prevent direct discharge of used water on the ground in order to minimize cross contamination and pollution. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hands free dispensing of soap<\/strong> to avoid cross contamination. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Touchless or low contact paper towel<\/strong> dispenser to prevent cross contamination. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paper towel receptacle<\/strong> with a liner and a closing lid to ensure waste is contained. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sturdy construction <\/strong>leading to durable use over a long lifetime. Consider weather resistant materials or paint to prolong the life of the unit. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stable design<\/strong> that won\u2019t tip over and which keeps parts intact. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Portable <\/strong>so that it can be easily moved to where it is needed. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Easy to maintain <\/strong>so that it remains useful and pleasant to use. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cleanable <\/strong>so that the handwashing station itself can be kept in hygienic condition. Surfaces should be smooth and cleanable and materials should be compatible with water and soap. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Stations destined for farmers market and PYO may also want to consider: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Family friendly <\/strong>design (e.g. height or stool) that ensures a child could use the station with little or no assistance. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ADA compliant <\/strong>and otherwise designed to allow improved access and use by those with physical disabilities. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> The CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/handwashing\/when-how-handwashing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"\u201cFive Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way\u201d (opens in a new tab)\">\u201cFive Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way\u201d<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> Washing your hands is easy, and it\u2019s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community\u2014from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals. Follow these five steps every time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> <strong>Wet <\/strong>your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>Lather <\/strong>your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>Scrub <\/strong>your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d song from beginning to end twice. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>Rinse <\/strong>your hands well under clean, running water. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>Dry <\/strong>your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Putting it into Practice <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The following images provide a general approach to a touchless handwashing station and two specific build plans. to the spigot using a 2\u201d snap ring. This allows for easy disassembly to change the water tote or to move the unit. A hole needs to be drilled near the far end of the toggle handle about halfway across the short side.
