{"id":580,"date":"2012-09-28T23:34:20","date_gmt":"2012-09-29T03:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/ctl\/?p=580"},"modified":"2012-10-12T14:33:27","modified_gmt":"2012-10-12T18:33:27","slug":"more-tips-on-infusing-udl-into-your-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/ctl\/2012\/09\/28\/more-tips-on-infusing-udl-into-your-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"More Tips on Infusing UDL into Your Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cast.org\/udl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Universal Design for Learning (UDL)<\/a><\/strong> is an educational framework, based in cognitive neuroscience, that encourages the design of flexible learning environments to accommodate a variety of learning styles and differences. This post focuses on one of the three core principles in UDL: <em>multiple means of representation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This means moving beyond textual representation by presenting information and conceptual knowledge to students in a variety of formats, e.g., images, video, and audio. Not only does research indicate that this practice can enhance student understanding and retention of course content, it can also be used to engage students and prime discussion. Students responding to an image, song or movie clip can spark reflection and debate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Effective use of multimedia in your teaching is non-trivial. It takes time to find the right image or clip and prepare it so that is accessible and available to all students. Fortunately, UVM has some resources to help you every step of the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: Finding Multimedia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are so many sources of multimedia, and so little time. To help you get started, CTL has collected a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/ctl\/?Page=resources-teaching\/multimedia\/external-list.php\" target=\"_blank\">list of websites<\/a><\/strong> where you can find images and videos <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-604\" style=\"padding: 12px;padding-right: 0\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/ctl\/files\/2012\/09\/filmstrip.jpg\" alt=\"film strip of flower\" width=\"190\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/ctl\/files\/2012\/09\/filmstrip.jpg 190w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/ctl\/files\/2012\/09\/filmstrip-104x150.jpg 104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/> applicable to many disciplines. Check out this link for information about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/ctl\/?Page=resources-teaching\/ip-copyright\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">copyright, fair use, and using multimedia<\/a><\/strong> in your courses, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Bailey\/Howe Library has several new, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/researchguides.uvm.edu\/streamingvideo\">searchable databases<em><\/em> for streaming media<\/a><\/strong> that provides access to licensed documentaries with relevance across the curriculum.\u00a0 Features for some of these databases include synchronized, searchable transcripts, editing capabilities to make video clips, and an embeddable video player that can be used in Blackboard courses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2: Making Multimedia Accessible<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Multimedia used in class or on the web needs to be ADA compliant. Video\/audio content needs to be captioned. Captioning not only benefits the deaf or hard of hearing student, but can also benefit students for whom English is a second language, and individuals with learning disabilities (hearing and reading at the same time can improve comprehension). For information regarding captioning services on campus, please see the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/caption\/\" target=\"_blank\">ACCESS offices captioning website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Images on the web also need to be accessible and take into consideration not only people with blindness, but also those low vision, color-blindness, or cognitive disabilities. For a comprehensive discussion on effective and appropriate use of images to facilitate comprehension, see <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/images\/\" target=\"_blank\">Creating Accessible Images<\/a><\/strong> on the WebAIM website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3: Making Multimedia Available on the Web<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want students to access your own audio\/video content on the web, or if the content\u00a0falls within Fair Use copyright guidelines,\u00a0use the <strong>UVM Media Manager<\/strong> tool to upload the files to your UVM server space, also known as your \u201czoo space.\u201d The Media Manager makes it simple to share your media by broadcasting it, linking to it, or embedding it on a webpage such as a Blackboard course page. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/ctl\/resources-teaching\/multimedia\/mm\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">See Media Manager directions here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to add media to your Blackboard (Bb) course is to use the Bb \u201cMashUp\u201d tool. This tool allows you to search YouTube, Flickr, and SlideShare (a site for viewing and sharing PowerPoint-like presentations), select content, and then embed this content directly into your Bb course.
