Is it the device that will  revolutionize scholarship or is it merely a gadget that differs from  many others not by its potential but simply by its marketing? The cloud  is already abuzz with posts on either side of these questions; some  extravagant praises, others equally extravagant jeremiads.<\/p>\n<p>One way to approach iPad use in education is to explore what can actually be done with it. At the first iPad for Scholars roundtable at the CTL we discussed several apps that are useful for scholars. These can be categorized as apps that are designed for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>collecting, storing and reading ebooks\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lexcycle.com\/\">Stanza<\/a> \u2013 ebook reader (reads  ePub and eReader books, not Kindle books). Links  to a library, free and  non-free books, free sheet music, can download  books purchased from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fictionwise.com\/\">Fictionwise<\/a>. Can share books from your Mac or Windows version of Stanza.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/feature.html\/ref=sa_menu_karl3?ie=UTF8&amp;docId=1000493771\">Kindle<\/a> \u2013 ebook reader. Syncs with your Kindle.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/nook\/index.asp\">Nook<\/a> \u2013 Barnes&amp;Noble\u2019s ebook reader.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/freebooksapp.com\/\">FreeBooks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epubbooks.com\/\">ePubBooks<\/a> \u2013 more books!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>storing, reading, and annotating PDF files\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodiware.com\/goodreader.html\">Goodreader<\/a> \u2013 for reading all kinds of files, especially PDFs (it will re-flow text to fit page). Coming soon in version 3: PDF annotation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajidev.com\/iannotate\/index.html\">iAnnotate<\/a> \u2013  \u201cintegrates its annotations directly into the PDF such that they  will be  available to any standard PDF readers like Adobe Reader or  Preview. You  can transfer PDFs via email, iTunes sync or even clicking  any PDF web  link in the integrated web browser.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li> creating documents, notes or other content, either through hand writing, typing, or dictating\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.evernote.com\/\">Evernote<\/a> \u2013 capture it (notes, web page, photo, screen shot), organize it, find it<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/dragon-dictation\/id341446764?mt=8\">DragonDictation<\/a> \u2013 transcribes your voice to text<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/writepad-for-ipad\/id363618389?mt=8\">WritePad<\/a> \u2013 handwriting recognition \u2013 takes notes with a stylus or finger, save as text<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/kzlabs.me\/iphone\/quick-graph\/\">Quick Graph<\/a> \u2013 graphing calculator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>accessing and editing documents that exist in other places (ex: Google Docs, docs on other local devices)\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/documents-to-go-office-suite\/id317117961?mt=8\">DocsToGo<\/a> \u2013 open, read, and edit .doc, .ppt. .xls files; access these files on   your iPad, from Google Docs or other online services, or from a folder   on your Mac.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/shareplus-lite-office-mobile\/id364891946?mt=8\">SharePlusLite<\/a> \u2013 connect to your Sharepoint sites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/wordpress\/id335703880?mt=8\">WordPress<\/a> \u2013 access and edit your blog from your iPad (that\u2019s how I wrote this!).    WordPress is the new UVM blog tool for public blogging. Check it out  at  <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/\">http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>browsing the web or accessing content\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.instapaper.com\/\">Instapaper<\/a> \u2013 save web pages for later offline reading<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/atomic-web-browser-fullscreen\/id347929410?mt=8\">Atomic Web<\/a> &#8211; an alternative to Safari<\/li>\n<li>NYTimes \u2013 Editor\u2019s Choice is the free iPad app (news, business,   technology, opinions, arts, features, videos). Other sections available   as iPhone\/Touch app (will appear small on your iPad screen.<\/li>\n<li>NPR \u2013 news, live streams, etc.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pandora.com\/on-the-ipad\">Pandora<\/a> \u2013 access radio stations via your iPad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Time Management apps \u2013 mentioned in our session were <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/things-for-ipad\/id364365411?mt=8\">Things<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/easytask-for-ipad\/id364875508?mt=8\">Easy Task<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omnigroup.com\/products\/omnifocus-ipad\/\">OmniFocus<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/taska-for-ipad\/id364871363?mt=8\">Taska<\/a>. Several of those, and others, are reviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipadlot.com\/ipad-news\/best-ipad-task-management-apps.html#more-3969\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>iPad management apps:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/pad-info\/id364220353?mt=8\">PadInfo<\/a> \u2013 get stats on your iPad, battery life, etc.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/appshopper.com\/ipad\/\">AppShopper<\/a> \u2013 the place to shop for Apps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another category that we are all waiting for, bibliographic management apps, is on the horizon. As of this writing there is no specific app for Endnote, but Zotero is inching closer as is the Mac-only reference manager, Sente.<\/p>\n<p>For those wishing to create ebooks, a number of solutions exist, some of which we will look at in the coming months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Will the iPad save or destroy education?
