{"id":2143,"date":"2018-08-03T08:15:58","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T12:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/ctl\/?p=2143"},"modified":"2018-08-03T11:26:59","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T15:26:59","slug":"creating-accessible-materials-reduces-stress-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/ctl\/2018\/08\/03\/creating-accessible-materials-reduces-stress-later\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating Accessible Materials Reduces Stress Later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My mother\u2019s words still ring in my ears: \u201cMeasure twice, cut once.\u201d I did a lot of sewing growing up and have learned that one hasty snip of the shears can lead to frustration, loss of time, and cost of additional materials.<\/p>\n<p>In preparing a course, when considering accessibility, a similar principle exists: <em>Do it right the first time.<\/em> Trust me, you will save yourself considerable stress if you keep accessibility in mind when creating materials instead of facing the daunting task of making changes under the pressure of time.<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on accessibility is essential for accommodating students with disabilities and beneficial for all students, consistent with the principles of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cast.org\/our-work\/about-udl.html#.W1tBkthKg0o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal Design for Learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>The following content was submitted\u00a0<\/em><em>to the Teaching Tips Consortium of the POD Network by<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Kevin S. Wilson, Instructional Design Consultant<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Center for Teaching and Learning, Boise State University<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<em>Don\u2019t Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability<\/em>, Steve Krug notes that making digital information accessible to everyone is \u201cnot just the right thing to do; it\u2019s profoundly the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Krug says, \u201cthe one argument for accessibility that doesn\u2019t get made nearly often enough is how extraordinarily better it makes some people\u2019s lives. How many opportunities do we have to dramatically improve people\u2019s lives just by doing our job a little better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learning a few key principles will allow you to do your job just a little bit better.
